Microblading 411

in Style Magazine.

Eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature. If you're not satisfied with the ones you have, there are so many ways to update them, including brow gel, pencils, and even tattooing. But now there's a very natural option that delivers semi-permanent results. Ladies, we'd like to introduce you to microblading. Unlike the sometimes Sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is more of an embroidery of trompe l'œil strokes that look just like real hairs.

Nadia Afanaseva, microblading expert and trainer at Eye Design New York gave us the 411 on the unique service, and after our talk there's no surprise why so many women love it. "Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows," she explained. The professional lash and eyebrow expert also revealed that those who just want to add a slight arch are also great candidates, and the results are a natural, undetectable fringe.

If you're still not sure how the technique differs from tattooing, Afanaseva explained that "during the microblading process we use a special microblading pen to draw on individual strokes one by one." It's an extremely meticulous process that takes around two hours to complete. Since the results will last for up to three years before beginning to fade it's good to know that the technicians pay so much attention to detail. "The first hour we’re drawing the shape in with removable pencil. That’s the longest part and the most important step. During this time, the best customized shape for every client is chosen." The pro advises clients to be cautious of places that claim to complete the process in one hour. "It's not a rushed procedure, it cannot be done in an hour."

Before the microblading begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area to minimize discomfort, followed by a liquid anesthetic. If you're worried that the process is painful, Afanaseva assures, "some clients may feel a slight discomfort, but it's relatively painless."

RELATED: 3 Steps to Perfect Brows
The best part about the technique is that there is no down time. Your new set of brows will be ready for a selfie immediately after the process. The pro, however, does recommend a follow-up one month after your appointment. "The healing process is different for everyone, and it takes between 25 and 30 days. After a month we recommend a 40-minute touch-up to most customers."
"Unlike eyebrow extensions, which you have to be careful about maintaining, microblading is low maintenance. After healing, you can rub them and enjoy swimming. No special care is required, except for a brief touch-up once a year." The smudge-proof solution will cost you anywhere between $700 and $800. But waking up every morning with perfect brows may totally be worth it.

Peels,Micro-Needling,Dermabrasion and Dermaplane?

Professional Peels, Microdermabrasion and mircopen_image.jpgMicro-Needling, are not one-size-fits-all types of skin.

Each tackles different issues and has varying degrees of recovery time. At Salon Estique we offer Peels, Microdermabrasion Micro-Needling and Dermaplane services.

Skin Challenge: Acne-Dullness-Enlarged Pores

A light Peel is for more superficial problems, glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid exfoliate the surface without irritation. A cocktail of two or three of these can address multiple issues at one. To boost radiance, clean pores to reduce the size a glycolic and a salicylic acid can be used. But you must be vigilant with sun protection.

Superficial peels are not a one and done deal. In and the ideal world a client would have a light peel/dermabrasion every 4-6 weeks to maintain a glow. For acne, a series of 4-6 peels spaced two weeks apart are recommended. If you feel your skin is looking dull, now the time to seek treatment.

*Micro-Needling is a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and is considered to be a non-ablative treatment for the skin.  This treatment means that the deep layers of the skin are being treated without the need to remove the top layer that is often done with other cosmetic skin procedures.  Micro-needling works for skin conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, scarring caused by acne or photodamage, to treat uneven skin tone and can dramatically reduce the appearance of large pores.

*Growth Factors The main task of human growth factors is to cause cell division and multiplication. Growth factors stimulate collagen production, and epidermal growth factor stimulates skin cell production. These are used along with Micro-Needling.

*Dermaplaning provides exfoliation and hair removal all in one treatment while dramatically increasing product penetration leaving skin with a bright, youthful glow.

To keep your skin at it's very best, schedule with one of our skincare professionals today! They can guide you to a regime that works best for you. 602.248.0077

Hair Color Glaze: Why you should consider getting one!

HAIR GLAZE (20% off In August use promo code BLGLAZE)2014_09_08_13_26_26.png

What exactly does it do? How is it different than hair color? Moreover, why is everyone getting them?

In Phoenix, it is about hair glaze treatments for many reasons which include, color trends, extreme heat, and the sun. Here are some reasons that make a hair glaze something you should consider.

1. A glaze will repair summer damage you have. It repairs your hair and undoes all that damage, so your hair feels a lot better. Glaze will deep condition your hair for ultimate softness and shine.

2. A glaze is not permanent hair color.  The glaze is very acidic does not penetrate the cuticle of the hair and in fact, closes the hair cuticle. The result is a smooth texture that will reflect light and feel much softer.

3. A glaze provides translucent color and intense conditioning. Glaze will enhance any variation of tone that you hair naturally has, allowing for a more subdued shade. If you have gray hair, and you put a gloss on, it will have a very tonal effect as opposed to one solid opaque color. It also makes your hair super shiny and silky.  It will even reduce a little bit of frizz, and overall, your hair feels like you had a conditioning treatment.

4. It can help tone down highlights. Highlights can look brassy or green by the end of summer; we recommend getting a glaze treatment to tone unwanted brassiness or to adjust the color.

5. You do not have to change your natural hair color to get the benefits of a glaze. Try a clear glaze, which is essentially a powerhouse conditioning treatment.

6. It is no-commitment change. A great thing about it is there’s no commitment, and it is going to fade on its own (within six weeks).  Moreover, if you want to change your hair, it does not interfere with any type of chemical service you want to do in the future

7. It is easy to maintain. All you need to do is use sulfate-free professional products that are made for colored hair, and you should be ok.

8. It is on target for fall 2016. This season’s hair trends will be rich tones. If you’re a brunette, go for a rich honey or espresso brown. If you’re a redhead, try a deep copper or auburn. Moreover, if you’re a blonde, opt for "bronde" or dark blonde.

EFFORTLESS UNDONE LOW BUN

This style works well on day old hair, if you need more volume and texture, start by spraying Oribe dry texturing spray throughout.

This will give oribe_dry_texturizing_spray.jpgyou fullness without a stiff feeling. Next add volume to the crown by backcombing a few sections and pin in place to create a bump. If you prefer a sleek look, skip this step. Now create a loose low ponytail. No need to make it too perfect— embrace the messiness!

Next, create the bun! First, part the hair into three sections. Next, wrap one section around the base of the ponytail and secure it with a bobby pin. Grab the second section and wrap it in the opposite direction of the previous section and pin it in place. You can stack these sections on top of each other. Don’t worry if any pieces are sticking out; you can go back and tuck them in later.
For the last section of the hair wrap it around the entire bun, pushing upwards. Secure it with a few more bobby pins and you are done! Follow with a little Oribe Superfine Spray to keep everything in place. Gently pull out a few face-framing pieces to keep the look effortless.

Micro-Needling

Micro-needling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment mircopen_image.jpgto rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.

What is Micro-Needling?
The Eclipse MicroPen uses a sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. This initiates the skin’s repair process to naturally produce collagen and elastin, ideal for smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks. Micro-channels created by the treatment allow for optimal absorption of topical products and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), enhancing their effects in the deeper layers of skin.

What does it feel like?Micro-Needling feels similar to sandpaper being moved across the skin. Topical numbing may be applied prior to your procedure, but no anesthesia or medications are necessary.

What can I expect after a Micro-Needling procedure?
The skin will be red and flushed, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn, for 12 hours to 3 days. You may also experience mild swelling, tightness, and/or mild peeling. Side effects are temporary and typically resolve within 3 days. Total healing time depends on the depth of the treatment, skin type, and skin condition, and some patients may heal completely in 24 hours.

When will I see the results?Clients typically notice an immediate glow, but visible improvement will take about 2-4 weeks and can continue for up to 6 months.

How many treatments will I need?A series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is ideal for optimal results. Some conditions like deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, and acne scars may need 6-8 treatments.

Widely considered to be one of the most effective treatments for improving the overall appearance of the skin.  Micro-Needling is a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and is considered to be a non-ablative treatment for the skin.  This means that the deep parts of the skin are being treated without the need to remove the top layer that is often done in other cosmetic skin treatments.  Micro-needling works for skin conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, scarring caused by acne or photo damage, to treat uneven skin tone and can dramatically reduce the appearance of large pores.

*Growth Factors are often added to this treatment, the main task of human growth factors is to cause cell division and multiplication. Growth factors stimulate collagen production and epidermal growth factor stimulates skin-cell production.

The best foundation you can wear is glowing, healthy skin!

skin.jpg

“The best foundation you can wear is glowing, healthy skin!”

Facials are an experience that refresh your whole perspective.  They are also important for good health. A facial (and facial massage) is extremely relaxing, but it can also help smooth fine lines and promote collagen production, which is the building block of the skin. This will help to prevent premature aging, wrinkles and sagging.

Here are a few key reasons why you should make facials a regular part of your health routine…

Circulation
A facial can help circulation, which will give you glowing skin! When blood circulation slows the skin’s health is impaired. Aging leads to slowed circulation, which inevitably results in dull, tired looking skin. A benefit of facial massages and steam is that both processes help to increase blood flow and this increase in circulation brings new nutrients to the skin. The new nutrients in the skin allow and encourage a youthful radiance and glow to surface. At home, you may cleanse and tone but the massage element tends to be missed in most people’s routine. This massaging is very important in preventing aging skin that can looks dull, tired and lifeless. An increased blood flow actually brings new nutrients to the skin and encourages a glow and radiance that can’t be accomplished at home.

Rehydration
A facial helps remove dead skin cells, which enables your skin to better absorb products for protection, hydration and nourishment. The professional products used during a facial help rehydrate your skin and and the movements assist the lymph in the body, allowing for detoxification of the skin as well as a brighter complexion.

Relaxation
A facial isn’t just about the health benefits; it’s also a perfect guilt-free opportunity to unwind and relax. Facials are an opportunity to lie back, get comfortable and let your skin be treated by a professional with the very best products on the market. Massages, comfy beds and hot towels are all part of the delicious pampering experience.

It is important to treat yourself from time to time, especially with the stress that is life.  After all, stress is one of the biggest contributors to skin issues so in this way a facial can benefit you twice over; once during the treatment and then again afterwards as your stress-free body rejuvenates your skin from within.

Your face is a worthwhile investment. Your skin is always on display and it’s appearance often influences how we feel about ourselves. Investing in proper skincare has a value that can help you to feel better about your skin at every age.  Regular facials and proper skincare products at home can easily help you achieve more balanced and beautiful skin.

Home Remedys Debunked: Beauty Tricks you should not try at home

Salon_Estique_digital_imagery_17477_1_2_.jpg

One of our very favorite ways to fill a lazy afternoon or lunch break, is the internet brimming with DIY home remedies for achieving glowing skin and healthy hair. Some of these tips are fantastic and land themselves on our own beauty boards—but some of them have sent us running to the comment section, frantic to implore that anyone and everyone reading please not do this to themselves.

Just because it’s a wholesome ingredient that you feel comfortable consuming (or, you know, using to scrub your countertops) doesn’t mean it belongs in your beauty routine. As Aveda-devoted professionals, we understand the lure of all things natural, but natural does not always mean effective — or safe. We’re looking out for you and your locks.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda

Any beauty-centered Pinterest page inevitably contains a pin proclaiming the wonders of going “No ‘Poo.” They’ve often swapped it for a combo of apple cider vinegar and baking soda. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but these things are much better left in your pantry.

Not to get too chemistry class on you, but baking soda is an incredibly alkaline irritant, meaning it strips hair of its natural oils — and also disrupts the pH of your hair, leading to damage and brittleness. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is highly acidic, making it similarly problematic in the pH department. It can also bring out brassy tones in darker hair color.

Shampoo strips some of your hair’s oils, yes, but it also replenishes them. Choose shampoos with natural oils, like buriti (found in Aveda’s Dry Remedy line) that are specifically chosen for their nourishing properties. And as a rule of thumb, ask a hairstylist before using anything that seems like it belongs in a science experiment.

The Olive Oil Hair Treatment

This one isn’t totally baseless. Olive oil is great for trapping moisture in, which is good news if you already have luscious, hydrated hair — but not so good if you’re looking to get it. (And, if you’re considering dousing your scalp with the same stuff you use to dress your kale, we’re guessing you probably are.)

Dry hair needs products that add moisture and create a protective barrier. The good news is, you have plenty of viable options for making sure this happens. Committed to moisturizing with an oil? Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil is one of our personal favorites, and coconut oil is a solid from-the-pantry option. As a bonus, neither of these will leave you looking greasy and unwashed, which we know from personal experience is an unfortunate side effect of the olive oil mask. It’s really hard to wash out.

Lemon Juice to Cure Dark Spots

Time for another foray into chemistry! (Sorry, everyone.) With a pH of 2, lemon juice is a highly acidic substance. That means that putting it on your skin can cause irritation and redness and disrupt the acid mantle, allowing bacteria into your pores.

Most horrifying of all, when exposed to sunlight, juices from citrus fruits like lemon and lime can inflict a condition called phytophotodermatitis, or “margarita burn”. Sounds fun, right? Wrong. It’s actually a chemical reaction that varies in severity from rashes to blistering second-degree burns. No thank you.

Baking Soda to Exfoliate/Get Rid of Blackheads

We’re reluctant to hate on baking soda so much, since it’s a great, time-tested product with about a million uses. Unfortunately, exfoliating shouldn’t be one of them. Again, the pH level of the stuff makes it problematic when applied to the delicate skin on your face. Manually exfoliating can also cause irritation, redness, and damage when done incorrectly.

You’re much better off choosing a product specifically formulated for use on your face. (Aveda’s  Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser is a great option with exfoliating jojoba beads AND nourishing mango butter.) And as for those stubborn blackheads? Your best bet is a facial with a professional esthetician, who can properly extract them for you.

Mayonnaise Hair Mask

This isn’t the most nourishing or fragrant option for treating your tresses.

We’ll give mayo this: it contains soybean oil, a vehicle for good-for-your-hair Vitamin E, and egg yolk, which features potentially nourishing oleic acid and Vitamins A, D, and E. However, it also contains vinegar and lemon juice — and we’ve already covered why those really have no place in your beauty routine.

Not to mention, it’s mayonnaise. In your hair. Mayonnaise in your hair. Don’t make us say it again.

The Bottom Line?

Remember that cosmetic chemists are extensively trained to incorporate safe and effective formulations of many ingredients in your beauty products. If it’s not specifically formulated for use on your hair or skin, always ask a hair stylist or esthetician before trying it out. If you’re seeking guidance, you can always post on our Facebook page or give us a ring — we’re more than happy to help.
